Dressing the Part
Playing dress-up isn't just fun for kids. I've enjoyed dressing up for different occasions over the years, but Halloween is definitely my favorite. I love to dress up as various artists, art pieces, and anything else that inspires a creative costume. I spend time teaching my students about the topic of my costume in the weeks prior and surprise them on the day we all dress up in our costumes at school.

Frida Kahlo
This was the first year I started the tradition of dressing up in art-related costumes for Halloween. The students loved it so much, I knew I'd have to start doing it each year.
Girl with Balloon
by Banksy
We learned about this infamous art event the week it occurred. This young student fell in love with Banksy's "Girl with Balloon" and drew it often from 2nd grade through her last year with me in 4th grade. My students were so excited when they saw my costume!

Student Art Dress
For our Fine Arts night in 2019, I selected one student from each class to draw anything they wanted on a white dress. I then wore it to the event. My students were so proud to have me wearing their art. I was even more honored to be wearing the work of my favorite artists!
Yayoi Kusama
Oh how my students loved making polka dotted pumpkins and learning about Yayoi Kusama! I filled my pumpkin bucket with strips of polka dot stickers that I handed out all day. One student said we had polkadotitis. Little did we know that later that school year we'd go virtual with the spread of COVID.

Virtual Teacher (Bitmoji)
In 2013 our Halloween costume day was postponed due to having to go virtual for two additional weeks. I decided to be my own virtual Bitmoji for the Halloween celebration held in mid-November.
Mona Lisa
My students had a legendary substitute in art on Halloween this year. I heard all about it when I returned the following day. I was so bummed I didn't get to meet Mona!
